Do i need to have insurance to drive a rental car across the border into mexico?

Well, yes you need insurance no matter what. If you are renting a car all you need to be worried about is TELLING your renting people what your plans are, then they'll let you know what needs to be done (or paid).

Last time I took a car I just signed papers and it was all included.

You don't have to, but if you get in an accident in Mexico your US auto insurance will not cover a vehicle outside of the US. In Mexico you need Mexican auto insurance. You can buy this at the last few exits before entering the Mexican border. It is suggested to get it, otherwise you are driving without insurance. Any border towns on the US side will have places that sell Mexican auto insurance. However, check to make sure your rental contract allows you to drive the car into Mexico. Some rentals have GPS units in them and the company can tell where you've been.
autoinsurance.undonet.com - try this one. I have their car insurance and, as I know, they can provide such a service.
