Whats the best way to get around on vacation in chicago? rental car or public transportation.?

i'm going to be there saturday, sunday and monday april 1-3Whats the best way to get around on vacation in chicago? rental car or public transportation.?
Public transportation is your best bet, as parking fees are very high in the city limits, perhaps equalling the daily cost of renting the car.

Also, the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) offers visitor passes good for 1, 2, 3 and 5 days that are good for transportation on all CTA trains and buses, as well as most PACE (suburban) buses. They cost 5, 9, 12 and 18 dollars repsectively. For more info, check out the CTA website at ...Whats the best way to get around on vacation in chicago? rental car or public transportation.?
If your going to be in downtown Chicago - I would just use public transportation.

Most of the attractions are within walking distance IF your going to be downtown.

If your on the outskirts of Chicago - then rent a car.

Traffic is not the real issue - it's parking and you can end up paying more for that alone then you would on a cab or the train.

I was there in Feb and we walked around all over downtown without any issues. The weather was pretty good too.

Make sure to bring a digital camera because there are so many nice things to see there.
Rent a car. There are plenty of great things to do in the suburbs as well as in the city. Go to the library and check out a Fodor's guide to Chicago %26amp; you'll see what I mean!
Best to rent a car. You might actually be spending more on public transportation, and for one thing cabs are expensive. You have your own reliable with a car.
DEFINENTLY by cab 'cause its more fun and most of thecab drivers are really nice to u if ur nice back!
If you wanna go downtown I advise getting info from your hotel on the FREE SHUTLLES...they are fun-like teh train in an amusment park,have stations throughout downtown and litte north side of the city; I used'em myself...they are FREE! Check out this web:

';Getting Around: Chicago offers one of America's best mass-transit systems, with subways in the ';Loop'; or downtown area, elevated trains (locals call them ';the El';) and buses. Lines serve both O'Hare and Midway airports, and are far cheaper than cab fare. It's customary and gracious to tip drivers of free shuttle buses in the Michigan Avenue area. If you'll be traveling in the Chicago suburbs, you'll need to rent a car.';

Wish you a happy and sunny vacation!
